Sunday Stray Thoughts
———————————————————————————–
I saw this morning that Summer’s latest blog post answers Blue Milk’s questions about “Feminism & Motherhood” . They are great questions, ones I answered for myself a long time ago and recognized to myself that Feminism & Motherhood are synonomous, regardless of what some may think or feel on the issue.
The questions I ask myself lately about feminism are regarding my own sexuality & behaviors. I need a symposium on “Feminism and S & M” . Can a woman who declares herself & lives her life with feminist values still be called a feminist when she loves being slapped around and being called a dirty little whore once she’s in the bedroom? Or are all bets on gender & lifestyle labeling completely off once the “This is What A Feminist Looks Like” T-shirt is thrown off and wadding into a ball on the bedroom floor and replaced by finely knotted bondage ropes and welts?
yeah, these are the feminist related questions I ask myself.

I hate the “greenwashing” trends I see, not JUST commercially & corporate but even on Etsy and other sites selling handmade goods. I’m sorry but taking a burlap bag your rice came in and sewing sad little handles onto it doesn’t deserve a pricetag of $48.00, just because you tagged it with “recycled” “upcycled” “eco-friendly” “reusable” “green” or any other enviro-catchphrase.
If you REALLY care about the environment, you’ll make your upcycled & recycled products affordable so they are more accessible to the average American who does not have $50.00 to spend on a shopping bag.

I scored bridal magazines on Freecycle this week. I have learned from perusing them that non-caucasian women and women bigger than size 7 just do not get married. They’re the mythical unicorns in the bridal magazine world.
I do not understand the advertising in bridal magazines at all. Fully dressed brides surrounded by naked men. Bridesmaids lounging with a disheveled “Just Been Fucked” look that suggests that the wedding reception doubled as an orgy. Brides in crash helmets and knee pads. Brides that look like they just threw up every last bit of their lunch before 6th period geometry class.
Nice ephemera for collaging though.

The radio reception in this house is terrible. In the room I had been using as my so-called-studio, I could only pick up a really bad classic rock radio station. I’m pretty sure they had a working playlist of about 18 songs ,played in a loop.
My understanding of the definition of classic rock is anything older than 15 years (give or take a few) but after Gene Vincent. When considering that time frame, there is an enormous amount of eargasmic music born in those years. Must we limit it to one choice Hendrix & Led Zeppelin song, “Sweet Home Alabama”, Poison, Alice Cooper and “The Wall”?
In my bedroom, it’s not much better. On the radio alarm clock, I can get a Christian Rock (uh…no thanks) station and a Soft Rock station out of Syracuse. On the rating scale of Rock, it’s gypsum.
I’ve considered not waking to the radio but opting for the air raid siren instead isn’t really that appealing.
I discovered this morning that, in addition to playing music not to my liking, that they have a special segment after “the real, boring news” which features the much more exciting and titilating Tabloid News. It was this that I woke up to.
I am a more enlightened being of the planet this morning knowing the private affairs of Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick (I know I’m supposed to care that he’s a “womanizer” but since he isn’t my significant other, I don’t really give a shit) , something blah blah about Britney being scared of something, Garth Brooks weight gain and Willie Aames botched Thanksgiving suicide attempt….
AND…much to the amusement of the DJs, U2 is writing the tunes for the Spiderman musical. That encouraged me to get my ass out of bed .I just couldn’t handle dumbasses making fun of both Spiderman and U2.
And then I went downstairs, turned the radio on in the kitchen to hear the fabulous sound of “Debaser” by The Pixies and all was well in my world again. Thank you WICB.

I have a new morning ritual.
I randomly snatch 10 magazines from my collage stash (I have hundreds and hundreds. It’s a little insane) and my handy scrap bin and without thinking, spend 5-10 minutes pulling images that catch my eye. I try not to plan or even think at all about why I’m choosing those images or how I can use them.
Then the glue stick and a blank page comes out and I spend the next 15 minutes doing a Stream of Consciousness Collage.
Chances are, a lot of these aren’t going to make sense or even be all that great to look at but much like Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages, I’m purging and cleansing my brain of residual visuals that are causing noisy static & interfering with the real art.
My pet name for this is Glue Stick Therapy.
