I don’t see how this could possibly be seen as a FAIL

[Also Not A Fail]

from here
Conversation my uber-geek hubby & I had over this photo:
Him: Why? Why would a storm trooper be singing in the rain?
Me: If you had a storm trooper costume, you’d do all sorts of goofy things with it,too
Him: Would not.
Me: Would so.
Him: Well…. not THAT I wouldn’t.
(I think he would)

This was my Book Club Book for next months meeting, chosen for it’s macabre & creepy storyline to accompany the month of October.
Set in Medieval times, the story features a female doctor who “the dead speak to”. Meaning, she’s a sort of a Temperance Brennan or Sara Sidle during a time when women were most definitely not supposed to be doctors, let alone speak to dead bodies. .Educated & raised in Salerno, Adelia is ordered by the King to travel to England to investigate the gruesome & brutal murders of 4 children in Cambridge that the Jews are being blamed & persecuted for. Under the guise of acting as assistant to her manservant, she avoids the inevitable questioning and accusal of witchcraft.
The mystery of the novel is a gripping plot on it’s own but it’s the character of Adelia ,with her early “feminist” views and examination of anti-semitism,anti-woman, superstition and plain churchy stuff in Medieval England that give the story depth & interest.

Randomosity, Bulleted For Your Pleasure
- I joked about how I was going to spend my weekend pouting & sulking because I’m missing NY Comic Con but really,I wasn’t that upset. Until I saw that Mastodon is there today and then I was all like, “Damn it, I miss all the good shit!” Hmmph.
- I did something I swore I would never, ever do: I joined a Book Club. We are now reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Whateverhislastnameis,I’mtoolazytoGoogleit.
- I lost 8.5 lbs in January. Down 2 more pounds so far this month.
- I dyed my hair black the other night. I’m not sure why but I like it.
- I resigned myself to the fact that I am not cut out for being a Work @ Home Mom.At least not in a writer/artist capacity. My online shop is now primarily a eco-friendly arts & crafts supply shop: reclaimed and salvaged fabrics & textiles, design elements, mosaic tesserae, ephemera, found objects …that sort of thing.
- My oldest son is leaving March 9th (the day after his 19th birthday) to go backpacking (or possibly bicycling) down through the South & godonlyknowswhere. He plans on staying in New Orleans for a bit to do reconstruction and Bonnaroo is on his agenda. So is Highway 61 and The Crossroads.
- I am not typically a worrier-mother but we’ll see how that goes post-March 9th.
- In a month, I’ll be 36, which is downright ancient according to the step-daughter
- People born in March are awesome. Purely objective observation.
- My ideal 36th Birthday Celebration would be to have lunch at Ruloff’s and then go see Watchmen (that right there was a very straghtforward “hint” to the man in my life.)
- When watching Watchmen, I will try not to bitch too much about obvious music selections missing from the soundtrack..and the whole My Chemical Romance nonsense.
- I do not like knitting short-row heels. I was fine w/ my other method, thankyouverymuch
- Cooking with the Movies is one of my favorite newly-discovered blogs
- My Grandmother has bladder tumors on top of her suck-ass Alzheimers. Fun months ahead for this family, I’m certain.
[title from "My City was Gone" by The Pretenders, because for some reason, it inserted itself in my brain this morning, even though I haven't heard it in forever and has been playing on repeat up there since 7 a.m. Specifically the part ..."From seneca to cuyahoga falls
Said, a, o, oh way to go ohio”. Whyyyyyyyyyy??????

I love my new keychain from geek details :

There are several meanings to this button I have found.
To a South Park fan, it’s just another episode.
To a WoW Geek (aka World of Warcraft player/virtual warrior ) , it’s a…hmmm…..I don’t know what it is. A quest or an achievement or something. Something the game tells you you have to do to get whatever it is you need. Levels or honor or whatethehellever. I’m told you have to hug a dead enemy. Sounds fun.
To the WoW Widow like myself, it’s a anti-warcraft protest statement, much like a modern day techy version of Lysistrata. Put down your weapons or you’re not getting any lovin’!, the Greecian women proclaimed. In my house it sounds more like, “I’m going to bed right now. If you want to get laid, you’ll get your ass off the computer and follow me, NOW.And no…I’m not role-playing or dressing up like some slutty Night Elf tonight.”
My library gives you a mini-version of your library card to put on your keychain, like a keycard. I am still trying to find a concise explanation of what “Make Love Not Warcraft” means to these mostly elderly, bookish women. I suspect that no matter how I describe it,I will still end up with that blank-Temperance-Brennan look, followed by “I have no idea what you’re saying”.
Enough about my new keychain, though, even though it is fabulous (well-constructed, nice quality, unique – all the awesomeness you look for in handmade items). geek details has a nice array of goods to express your inner geek. My WoW Widower spotted this “For the Horde” serving platter and I could see that he was thinking of smashing my Grandma’s china into a zillion pieces to use for mosaic tesserae so he could have an excuse to replace them with an entire set of these babies. (he scoffs at 14″ plates being called platters. That’s dinner plate size to him. What is it with this big burly Tauren men and their eating?)
Beyond World of Warcraft expressions, there are plenty of other geeky sentiments in the form of art prints, cards, drinking glasses, buttons, keychains and more. Sentiments close to my heart ,like “River Tam could kill Chuck Norris with her brain” (because that is so totally true) and “You’re a great friend…but if the zombies chase us, I’m tripping you” (is it wrong that I’ve actually said this to my kids before? I’m kidding, you know. I might trip the neighbor’s kid but not my own) .
And my current-events favorite:

I think this a button we can all get behind right now, unless of course you’re one of the Big Guys who are lobbying FOR CPSIA regs.
You can check out geek details on both Etsy (there is more inventory to chose from there…including geeky Valentines I love) & Artfire, as well as seeing what else is going on at the blog.

Listen: What was the last concert you went to, and what was your experience like?
I think the last concert I went to was MC Lars. The show itself was awesome .Of course. I have the biggest, geekiest crush on MC Lars. It’s sad.I can’t help it though. It’s the brains that gets me. But anywhore…being there in itself was an interesting experience. I went alone (probably the last time I will ever go to a concert alone) and right away, a security guard started giving me shit. Was barely thru the gate and this guy was like, “Hey, shouldn’t you be home in bed?Are you here with someone?” . Apparently he thought I was 12 or something (I know…looking like I’m 12 when I’m nearly 36 should be a huge compliment but it’s mostly just a pain in the ass. And honestly,I’m a little offended! I have curves like a woman, dammit! ). THEN, this old, very inebriated guy started hitting on me…and I kept thinking back to the security dude who thought I was 12 and was just like, “EW.Awesome. Pedophiles think I’m hot”. Oh…and he offered me a small round white object he tried to make me believe was a breath mint. Wow.I ended up hanging out with 2 lesbians and some guy who didn’t speak English and was even more creeped out as Mr. Creepo Pedophile tried talking to young boys about how their summer vacation was going.
Watch: Is there a movie that inspires you? If so, which one?
some of that German amateur porn I watch sometimes . Now that is inspiring. However, I tried our own version the other night and I’m not quite ready to pull off the German accent …nor do I speak German well enough yet to make it authentic. It just ended up sounding like a dirty remake of Fargo.”oo,yahh…”
Read: What was the last time you read a book and saw the film adaptation afterwards? What was your reaction?
It was A Man Called Horse .It was an excellent short story by Dorothy M. Johnson and for whatever reason, I thought I must see the movie afterward. I’m usually sorry when I watch the film after reading the book. I get way too annoyed with all-wrong casting, plot changes and even itty-bitty details no one cares about. Really, I should just look at the book and the film as two separate art forms but my brain doesn’t let me do that.
Bonus points go to the movie though for accurate depiction of Sioux culture and traditions.

The radio reception in this house is terrible. In the room I had been using as my so-called-studio, I could only pick up a really bad classic rock radio station. I’m pretty sure they had a working playlist of about 18 songs ,played in a loop.
My understanding of the definition of classic rock is anything older than 15 years (give or take a few) but after Gene Vincent. When considering that time frame, there is an enormous amount of eargasmic music born in those years. Must we limit it to one choice Hendrix & Led Zeppelin song, “Sweet Home Alabama”, Poison, Alice Cooper and “The Wall”?
In my bedroom, it’s not much better. On the radio alarm clock, I can get a Christian Rock (uh…no thanks) station and a Soft Rock station out of Syracuse. On the rating scale of Rock, it’s gypsum.
I’ve considered not waking to the radio but opting for the air raid siren instead isn’t really that appealing.
I discovered this morning that, in addition to playing music not to my liking, that they have a special segment after “the real, boring news” which features the much more exciting and titilating Tabloid News. It was this that I woke up to.
I am a more enlightened being of the planet this morning knowing the private affairs of Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick (I know I’m supposed to care that he’s a “womanizer” but since he isn’t my significant other, I don’t really give a shit) , something blah blah about Britney being scared of something, Garth Brooks weight gain and Willie Aames botched Thanksgiving suicide attempt….
AND…much to the amusement of the DJs, U2 is writing the tunes for the Spiderman musical. That encouraged me to get my ass out of bed .I just couldn’t handle dumbasses making fun of both Spiderman and U2.
And then I went downstairs, turned the radio on in the kitchen to hear the fabulous sound of “Debaser” by The Pixies and all was well in my world again. Thank you WICB.

I now have a real reason to bring my crochet skills up to par w/ my knitting skills

I know this little kid who spends endless amounts of time wandering around the house pretending he is Plex from Yo Gabba Gabba. Crafty is Cool has an awesome assortment of amigurumi patterns , including this adorable Plex. The youngest spawn will be thrilled and I will be the bestest mama is the whole wide universe.
(well, I am already but it’ll boost my rating on the cool-mometer)
I want this hat for myself ,though.
I really should get around to crafting myself a Super Martian Robot Girl costume. I spend enough time pretending to be Super Martian Robot Girl…I should look the part.
