Old Jack o’ Lantern’s grinning, Pointing jagged yellow teeth at me

November 23, 2008 · 6 Comments

I opened up the bathroom door to see a child standing in the hallway, waiting patiently, with this smile on his little face that I knew meant he had been up to no good, yet whatever it was he had done, he was proud of it.

“I made pumpkins!”

“You made pumpkins? Show me.”

He led my into the bedroom and pointed to the wall above his sister’s bed. A quartet of pumpkins grinned back with happy yet eerie jack-o-lantern grins.

“AHH! you’re not supposed to draw on the walls!”

The little imp, he gave me this little smile and put on those wide-eyes. “Oh,I’m not?” It was pure feigned innocence, which is both infuritating and adorable.

“No, you are not.”

“I’m supposed to only draw on paper?” More saccharine-sweet feigned innocence. Oh,this kid….

“Yes. PAPER ONLY.Got it?”

He looked up at his artwork and told me,”But paper isn’t BIG enough!”

I wonder if Diego Rivera started out with pumpkins on the bedroom wall.

Indians scattered, On dawn’s highway bleeding Ghosts crowd the young child’s, Fragile eggshell mind

October 29, 2008 · 3 Comments

Wednesday Media Mix, 10.29.08

Listen: See if you can come up with 3 songs with the word “ghost” in the title.

Easy.

  1. “Is There a Ghost?”, Band of Horses
  2. ” Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore”, The Mars Volta
  3. “The Ghost Song”, The Doors

Watch: Are you planning on watching any horror movies this week? If so, which ones?

I have an 11 year old who claims NOTHING scares her. At the risk of traumatizing her for life, I am definitely planning on testing out her claim with some horror movies. I just haven’t decided which ones ,yet…

Read: Name a scene in a book that gave you chills.

Headless baby on spit, roasted to perfection.

[title from "The Ghost Song", The Doors]

(sidenote: that particular lyric refers to a time during Jim Morrison’s childhood when his family came across a car accident that involved Indians. It had a huge impact on him and is referenced often in his writing.)

Jupiter’s Soundtrack: The Fall Edition

October 20, 2008 · 6 Comments

My son made me a mix CD….songs that make him think of this time of year, especially Halloween.

The Halloween/Fall Mix CD

  1. “Dig Up Her Bones”, The Misfits
  2. “Season of the Witch”, Donovan
  3. “I Put A Spell On You”, CCR
  4. “Thriller”, Michael Jackson
  5. . “Psycho Killer”, Talking Heads
  6. “Burn the Witch”, Queens of the Stone Age
  7. “Strange Brew”, cream
  8. “Running with the Devil”< Van Halen
  9. “Moonlight Drive”, The Doors
  10. “Werewolves of London”, Warren Zevon
  11. “We only Come Out At night”, Smashing Pumkins
  12. “Three Hours”, Nick Drake
  13. “20 Eyes” ,The Misfits
  14. “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, Blue Oyster Cult
  15. Halloweenhead”, Ryan Adams
  16. “Riders of the Storm”, Jim Morrison
  17. “Halloween”, Sonic Youth
  18. “Monster Mash”,Bobby Pickett & the Crypt Kickers

Two songs on this list would have made it onto The Soundtrack anyway  – “Burn the Witch” &  “Season of the Witch”

My son has deemed “Burn the Witch” as one of the songs he associates with me. I’m slightly afraid to ask for the explanation behind the association. I probably should just be happy he thinks enough of me to give me theme songs.

October of when I was 15, I fell in love with a book, Season of the Witch by James Leo Herlihy and tied the Donovan song to it. It was a perfect companion. I recently found my copy of the book, coverless, battered, worn. Thumbing through it,I found words, sentences, whole pages underlined ,circled ,marked to have meaning.

So long ago, I can’t remember what they meant to me.

My earth-mother urges are overwhelming ,I underlined. I knew more about my future self than I did my own present self.

I had a diagnosis of religion around that time by a mystic woman who drove a seafoam green 1959 Mercury and had the wisdom to see further into me than I could. I had known years before that I was not a God-follower but had a spiritual path to follow – one that involved something more earthly, but she put the label on it for me.  So I smile and tell him I’m a white witch and my magic is love ,underlined. May have been the first verification to myself that I too was a witch.

Everything is wrong that forbids the freedom of the individual

—–Dylan Thomas

Did I know who Dylan Thomas was before this? I don’t remember. Was this the book that led me to read more Dylan Thomas and eventually name a kid after the author?

Funny things underlined, like:

i nearly fell over in a dead faint,he’s that beautiful.Puerto Rican and Italian with a little German thrown in, and the combination is utter pornography .His handshake alone is an aphrodisiac. And no woman should look at him head-on without sunglasses unless she wants to run the risk of making a fool of herself on the spot. Witch Pisces Me wanted to jump right in his lap, but somehow Witch Moon-in-Scorpio Me has been able to maintain a certain cool….

Mmm hmmm…..those Archie Fiesta-types. A lifetime of trouble surrounding those ones. Even then,20 years ago, I knew my weakness. It’s too bad I never figured out how to get a grip like the character in the book.

Has it really been TWENTY years since I was 15 years old? Wow.

Anywhore, this is the Special Edition Soundtrack :

*EDIT*

Every so often,I’ll hear…”Crap, I forgot about*insert title of song here*” or I think of one myself

These are the additions:

  1. “The Three Shadows,Part 2″, Bauhaus
  2. “Bela Lugosi is Dead”, Bauhaus
  3. “The Number of the Beast”, Iron Maiden
  4. “This is Halloween” ,the Panic at the Disco version (because it’s unavoidable w/ 2 preteen girls in our house)
  5. “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”, The White Stripes

more to come,I’m sure.
