[Tuesday Tunes] Sick sick sick, don’t resist

October 28, 2009 · 2 Comments

This week’s Tuesday Tunes : What is the creepiest music video you’ve ever watched?

The very first video that popped into my head is probably not the typical definition of creepy but seriously, I’ve never been more skeeved out watching a music video. This one by Trace Adkins:

That man makes my tummy feel funny and not in a good way. I refuse to believe that those girls didn’t pick up on the creepy factor ,too. Damn good actresses, all of ‘em!

More traditionally “creepy”? Maybe I’m only thinking of it because I was reminded of it by this “How to Make A Meat Hand” tutorial but Queens of the Stone Age’s  “Sick Sick Sick”  is kind of delightfully creepy. Although it’s a little sad seeing your favorite band being eaten by some very hungry woman.

There are definitely some more disturbing & creepy videos out there. I just don’t feel like thinking about them right now.

Friend: You don’t blog anymore. I miss reading your posts. You should blog more

Me: Well…I do ….Tweet.Or Twitter. Or whatever you call it.

*pause*

Me: I microblog.That’s something ,right?

Friend:  No.Not the same. I don’t Twitter.Or Tweet. I don’t get Twitter AT ALL. Maybe you could just take everything you Tweet or Twitter & put it on your blog.

Me: Oh…like a digest.

Friend: Yes.

Okie dokie,then.

Twitter Digest – 8-25-09

→ Adding to Bucket List: Hike the entire Appalachian Trail ( http://bit.ly/3Mo3RL )

→ It’s ridiculous that we actually need an activist movement like this one: Drying For Freedom ( http://bit.ly/2mNtnh )

Ooohh…on my blog, I don’t have just 140 characters! I can elaborate. Drying for Freedom is an entire  film about clotheslines. The premiseBy 2010 more than 50 million homeowners will be banned from line drying clothes outdoors for the sake of preserving property value and prudishness, the ban which infringes on a homeowners civil rights is contributing to the environmental and energy crisis, considering the dryer is responsible for 6% of the average households energy bill, as well as costing the U.S. an estimated $5 billion annually. For the record,I like my clothes line dried, even when i do have a working dryer, which hasn’t been for a very long time.

→ Another Bucket List addition RT: @TheBellWitch: @JupiterSinclair and then there’s the Pacific Coast trail too http://www.pcta.org/

RT: @geekgirldiva: RT @geekgirls Top 10 Women Comic Book Characters | http://bit.ly/R9HRA (written by @MariBiscuits)

→ Watching: Mastodon – Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife. (lolz) ( http://bit.ly/3AnQ98 )

Well,hell..might as well add “Hike Continental Divide Trail” to Bucket List & go for the Triple Crown ( http://bit.ly/jLg7S )

Simply awesome RT: @crookedvultures: Gunman x Lowlands http://vultur.es/19

For Under-Rock_Dwellers (or people who just don’t care about music all that much), Them Crooked Vultures are John Paul Jones ,Josh Homme & Dave Grohl. I’m reluctant to use the term “supergroup”.it sounds so cheesy & undermines the epicness of this.

Reflects a good deal of my issues w/ public school, particularly elementary level….children processed like raw materials, schools expecting parents to surrender their own parenting style to allow others to uniformly indoctrinate children, blanket education regardless of learning styles & individual personality needs….

When she’s on her best behavior Don’t be tempted by her favors

May 20, 2009 · 1 Comment

[Listening To] Coverville has become part of my morning routine, at least on the mornings that there’s a brand spanking new podcast up. I’ve always loved cover songs and hearing an artists interpretation of what another artist created so no brainer – I love Coverville. The latest is a listener request edition, started off with “Never  Turn Your Back On Mother Earth”, both the original & Neko Case’s cover. In  other words, it’s started off great.

[Read] tales_from_the_farm_cover_lgLes is 10 and his Mother has died from cancer. As the local gas-station owner/damaged & broken ex-NHL star Jimmy says, “That’s fucked up”, and it is. Les is fatherless so he now lives w/ his Uncle on a farm in Southwestern Ontario. Les wears a superhero cape & a mask, spends most of his time alone in his room creating his own comics or reading comics or acting out fantasies that involve alien invasions & Lester features as The Hero. Jimmy feeds into the fantasies, becoming his only friend and his relationship with his custodial Uncle goes through awkward & strained development. Black & white illustrations are  emotionally charged & evocative. This received a thumbs up from both me & my 12 year old, who can’t wait to read the next one.

[Watched] Shine a Light

Ok, truthfully – I did not watch the whole thing. I appreciate that it’s Martin Scorcese AND The Rolling Stones but for me, it was all about Jack White.

Hey, Little Girl, Comb Your Hair, Fix Your Make Up

May 14, 2009 · 4 Comments

[High School Students Petition to Ban Songs w/ Sexist & Degrading Lyrics from Prom] Overall, I’d say these high school students get a huge thumbs up for their activism against sexism.Any sort of banishment of a media form is censorship, though…and I am wholeheartedly against censorship. But overall? Good job, kids.

My personal listening choices might not reflect my approval, nor might the music I let my own children listen to,but  I’ve also raised my kids with a foundation that fosters respect and combats inequality in all forms. I’m sure it sounds hypocritical and maybe it is but I guess what I’m saying is, even my 12 year old daughter can pick a misogynistic lyric from a song and remark, “Whoa…someone has some serious issues with women!”, and carry on, not internalizing it. My oldest son loves certain songs about drug use but he is adamantly against drugs (yeah,yeah…..I know what you’re thinking: All parents THINK their kids aren’t into drugs but trust me – the kid that won awards from the DARE program and endured lots of ridiculous petty picking on in school  because he wouldn’t take drugs offered at a party? yeah…not a drug user.)  Just saying…media can be valuable and enjoyed for the sake of the art form, even if the subject matter doesn’t pertain to something socially redeeming. Kids who have solid values & ethics instilled at home are a lot less likely to be influenced by lyrics or film images that go against the grain of socio-positive values. In our house, if one of my kids hears or sees something that they find disturbing or alarming , that, folks, is what we call a “teachable moment” . There’s two kinds of parents: The kind that steers their child past the homeless man on the street and ignores their child’s questions about said homeless man…and there’s the kind of parents who allows a Q & A session to be opened, despite the unpleasantness and social shame of the situation. I’m the latter type of parent.  Unfortunately, not all parents are as hands on as I believe they should be and songs that encorage any sort of -ism can definitely influence and foster acceptance of certain mindsets.

One of the high school students was quoted as saying:“Some of the songs call women `bitches’ and `hos,’ or refer to them as objects and treat them like animals,” Conrique said. “We find that offensive.” The problem though, is not just that it’s offensive to young women ….it tells young men that this stance is perfectly acceptable when it most definitely is not, and that’s  who needs to be shielded from the influence most. Let’s face it…. these kids are going to listen to these songs in their daily, non-Prom life. The problem is, the right person and perspective isn’t always going to be present to help see the light in the teachable moment. What these high school kids did was to bring attention to issues that some may not have thought twice about but should have.

On a side note, I hate the PMRC and MPAA.  Just saying.

And speaking of misogony in music…..

[Girls, if your husband fucks his secretary it's your fault.] This 5-second synopsis should have told me I really didn’t want to go listen to “Wives & Lovers” by Jack Jones, but OF COURSE, that didn’t stop me from click-clickety-clicking away on the link. If I had a dime for every time I clicked on a link that I just knew was going to piss me off, I’d be rich. I am a true  masochist. Oh,yeah…I love the taste of suffering.

“It’s misogynitastic!”, says one You Tube commenter. My spellcheck doesn’t agree but I give you points for work make-upage,friendo.

Sad part? My Mom had this album and she liked it. I think she even had Dionne Warwick’s version. Yes, Burt Bacharach, who penned the song,  included women in on his chauvinist-fest.

The lesson here, girls…or the teachable moment, if you will… is NOT that you need to be at your prettiest and sparkliest at all times to keep your man satisfied. The message here is to NOT end up partnered with a sexist and shallow ass who believes a woman exists on earth to be pretty and offer unconditional servitude.

And why can’t I stop listening to this song???  What sort of anti-feminist crack did they put in that track?? Help. I think I feel the urge to buy something pink and lacy. Ew. I loathe pink and lace is just itchy. Black & spandex. That’s the ticket. Now,where’s my whip?

“Don’t be like that,Christian parents!” -Michael Mills, some Christian minister dude

May 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

Shakesville Radio seemed like a good way this morning to recover from my sugar-salt hangover after gorging myself until 2 a.m.  on pretzels dipped in melty ,gooey caramel sauce, while watching 30 Rock.  There are excerpts  this week from Michael Mills’ exposing   the Satanic side of  rock music revealed through backmasking. What better way to spend a Sunday morning than listening to Christian rhetoric about subliminal messages from Satan’s Servants aka Rock Musicians and some very helpful ways to help interpret rock lyrics. Motor,engine=sex.Groovy=intercourse.Funky=the smell of sex? Groupies= Rock Prostitutes. Yes.Yes,they do.

Another excerpt from Michael Mills can be found here, which includes clips from key songs ,played forward, backwards, sideways and on their head. “Stairway to Heaven” never sounded so good.

More Satanic “666″ -themed songs and clips can be found at this blog post, Idle Blogs are the Devil’s Playground.

Oh..and since this is Sunday, I’m going to take this opportunity to confess something related to 30 Rock. It’s really embarrassing but….I think I have   a little crush on Alec Baldwin’s Voice. Just is voice,I promise. Weird, huh? I should probably try to imagine him calling his daughter a pig or whatever the hell he called her in that leaked phone message. That should cure it.

I’m going to go listen to songs with backmasked messages now. Have a great Sunday, folks!

Wren the Polyamorous Polar Bear and His Story of Redemption

April 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

Just like poly people, poly polar bears have problems finding lovers who are on the same wavelength.

Check out all the other Songs of the Day from Rock Cookie Bottom, too. I especially like the recent Waterboarding Torture Song, with lyrics taken directly from torture memos. Always good to use something sick & twisted in a creative way.

AND…speaking of The Song of the Day -  NPR’s Song of the Day today is MC Lars’ “True Player for Real” .

(we have covered my fandom before. We won’t revisit)

I sort of forgot that today was Earth Day. As someone who ‘celebrates” Earth Day every day (gawd, that sounds dorky but it’s true) ,when Earth Day comes along, I just say my ,”Happy Earth Day” and move along. BESIDES, ever since I watched “The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer” , I associate Ira Einhorn with Earth Day. It’s not good to have images of some asshole fucktard shoving his pretty, emotionally-abused girlfriend (played by Naomi Watts) into a chest to rot in a closet! Einhorn was one of those “charming personalities”  who was really an insane misogynistic murderer who had everyone fooled (much like the “clean-cut nice boy Med student who allegedely killed 2 women recently) . He was an activist and is often credited for organizing the first Earth Day. Hence, I associate Earth Day with dead girls in closets.

On a happier (MUCH happier) note, HUGE congrats to Summer at Wired for Noise for giving birth to an Earth Day Baby this afternoon!  Many blessings to her and her family. Hope you all have the happiest of babymoons :)

What if God was one of us ….Just a slob like one of us

Links I Saved Because I Didn’t Have Time To Read Them Until Now

[Burger King's Square Booty Call] I don’t have TV ,so I miss the lunacy of bad commercials. That’s what the internet is for. “Is the ad offensive, goofy, or just really effing bizarre?” I’m going to go with ,”Effing bizarre”.

[From Pro-Life Feminist to Pro-Choice ] Cate Nelson shares how her views as a Pro-Life feminist who shifted her views to the Pro-Choice angle. Sensible, articulate and much appreciated by myself, a feminist who values and respects life but holds choice as a sacred right.

[The Feminist Summer Reading List] If nothing else, I will make a point to read Mrs Dalloway this summer. I have 3 copies of the book, taunting me,unread. My intention was to read that and then The Hours by Michael Cunnngham. We’ll see what happens.

[Modern Hooker comics] online comic about..well, duh…a Modern Hooker.

[Fuck Yeah Cilantro] “IF YOU DON’T LOVE CILANTRO WITH ALL YOUR HEART I WILL FIGHT YOU.NO JOKE” . I’m down with that.  My apologies to Cilantro Haters who get that soapy taste in their mouth whenever they eat this rather swell herb. Maybe if you didn’t have such a dirty fucking mouth, Mother Nature wouldn’t feel the need to punish you.Ever think of that?

[Rainn Wilson bongos with Rivers Cuomo] covering Joan Osbourne’s “What if God Was One of Us”

[The Printz Project] I swore off  reading challenges but I’m  joining  this one. It’s a perpetual challenge so no time constraints…and they’re  books I’d probably want to read anyway. Meh,why not?

["My Mother's Garden"] Interview & video clip with documentary filmmaker Cynthia Lester about her new documentary about her mother’s hoarding disorder and mental illness. SO heart-wrenching & mind-boggling.
